Understanding Faith
and the capabilities and limits of God
By: Brother S.
Evans holyliving@gmail.com
What
is Faith? How do I increase my faith? What can I expect from God? Does God
still perform Miracles? How should I pray?
What is too big for God?
These
are questions that some Christians may not fully understand how to answer. I
hope that this commentary will provide you with insight to these types of
questions. As you read the text, you will see that more than 80% of it is
composed of Bible scripture, with the remaining being my comments.
To
help us understand the gifts of God (Salvation, Faith, or the other spiritual
gifts), it is helpful to understand the capabilities and limitations of God.
In
the first two pages of this commentary, I have listed verses that may help
define the greatness of God’s power. The
remaining pages are dedicated to uplifting scriptures of Biblical promises.
†The use of the name God or Lord in this
commentary is referring in general to the Biblical Holy Trinity being composed
of God the Father, his Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. All
scripture references provided in this document are from the Kings James Version
Bible.
The power
of God:
We
read in the first chapter of the Bible that God created all things. I don’t see any evolution based “Big Bang”
events listed here, but I do see a master creator that systematically planned
the universe and all things according to his purpose. As I read through these verses, the
nonchalant statement that “he made the stars also” (Genesis
Genesis
1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
1:2 And the earth was without form, and
void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved
upon the face of the waters. 1:3 And God
said, Let there be light: and there was light. 1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
1:5 And God called the light Day, and
the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first
day. 1:6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters,
and let it divide the waters from the waters. 1:7 And God made the firmament, and divided the
waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the
firmament: and it was so. 1:8 And God
called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second
day. 1:9 And God said, Let the waters
under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
Ephesians
3:9 And to make all men see what is the
fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid
in God, who created all things by Jesus
Christ:
Colossians
1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that
are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or
principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
We read in Ephesians and
Colossians that God through Jesus created all things and that he existed
before all things. I’ve heard people question the eternity of God and ask
where God came from or how he began. Due to the nature of human existence, it
is difficult for us to completely understand the concept of eternity. For
humans, there is always a start and end to all things, but this is not the case
with God. When trying to comprehend eternity, we should consider that God only provided
humans with a limited mental capacity that makes a complete understanding of
eternity very difficult.
Jeremiah
32:17 Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great
power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee: 32:18
Thou showest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the
iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great,
the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name,
32:19 Great in counsel, and
mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men:
to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his
doings:
Isa 66:1 Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the
house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
In Job 9 we see it
mentioned again that God created the celestial constellations
Job 9:5 Which removeth the mountains, and they know
not: which overturneth them in his anger.
9:6 Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof
tremble. 9:7 Which commandeth
the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars. 9:8
Which alone spreadeth out the
heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea. 9:9
Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and
Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.
Job
God states and then asks
Jeremiah if anything is too hard for him
Jeremiah
32:17 Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great
power and stretched out arm, and there
is nothing too hard for thee:
Jeremiah
32:26 Then came the word of the LORD
unto Jeremiah, saying, 32:27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?
God questions Job about man’s
limitations compared to his own power and ask the question “where wast
thou” during the creation of all things
Job 38:1 Then the LORD
answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, 38:2
Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? 38:3
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer
thou me. 38:4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare,
if thou hast understanding. 38:5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou
knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? 38:6
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner
stone thereof; 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all
the sons of God shouted for joy?
38:8 Or who shut up the sea with
doors, when it broke forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? 38:9
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddling
band for it, 38:10 And broke up for it my decreed place, and set
bars and doors, 38:11 And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no
further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed? 38:12
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring
to know his place; 38:13 That it might take hold of the ends of the
earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? 38:14
It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment. 38:15
And from the wicked their light is withheld, and the high arm shall be
broken. 38:16 Hast thou entered into the springs of the
sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth? 38:17
Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the
doors of the shadow of death? 38:18 Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth?
declare if thou knowest it all.
38:19 Where is the way where
light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof, 38:20
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou
shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
38:21 Knowest thou it, because
thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great? 38:22
Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the
treasures of the hail, 38:23 Which I have reserved against the time of
trouble, against the day of battle and war?
38:24 By what way is the light
parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth? 38:25
Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way
for the lightning of thunder; 38:26 To cause it to rain on the earth, where no
man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man; 38:27
To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the
tender herb to spring forth? 38:28 Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten
the drops of dew? 38:29 Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary
frost of heaven, who hath engendered it?
38:30 The waters are hid as with
a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
38:31 Canst thou bind the sweet
influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? 38:32
Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide
Arcturus with his sons? 38:33 Knowest
thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the
earth? 38:34 Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds,
that abundance of waters may cover thee?
38:35 Canst thou send lightnings,
that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are? 38:36
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding
to the heart? 38:37 Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who
can stay the bottles of heaven,
38:38 When the dust groweth into
hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
38:39 Wilt thou hunt the prey for
the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions, 38:40
When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in
wait? 38:41 Who provideth for the raven his food? when
his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.
Satan is a created being
and, like all of God's creatures, is subject to the final authority of God.
Satan is not permitted to do anything unless God first allows him. In Job 1 and
2, God granted permission for the devil to touch Job's possessions and even his
physical body, but refused to allow Satan to kill him.
Job 1:9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth
Job fear God for naught?
James
4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from
you.
Revelations
12:9 And the great dragon was cast out,
that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world:
he was cast out into the earth, and
his angels were cast out with him.
Revelations
20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone,
where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night forever and ever.
Even the unbelievers are
ultimately subject to his control:
2Chronicles
20:6 And said, O LORD God of our
fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest
not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to
withstand thee? 20:7 Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the
inhabitants of this land before thy people
Psalms

Nahum
1:3 The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the
wicked: the LORD hath his way in the
whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
1:4 He
rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan

Jesus said that he was the
first and the last or the beginning and the end. He was before all things and
will exist after life as we know it is over.
Revelations
21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and
the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water
of life freely. 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things;
and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
Things impossible for God
You may wonder how can this
great God that we serve have limitations, but after reading the following verses
you will see that there two things that the Lord can’t do.
Hebrews
6:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie,
we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon
the hope set before us:
2Corinthians
Numbers
It is impossible for the
Lord to either LIE or SIN. Holding to this understanding, we know that the Lord
will hold true to any promises that he made! Keep this in mind as you read the
remainder of this commentary.

Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and
today, and forever.
The Lord promises Abraham (at
99 years of age) that he and Sarah (90 years old) will have a child. We read
that Sarah laughs within herself at this thought and then the Lord asks if
anything is too hard for him. After reading of the unlimited power of the Lord,
is there indeed any thing too hard for him?

Hebrews

10:13 There hath no temptation taken you
but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will

Jude

Malachi 3:8 Will a

thee? In tithes and offerings. 3:9 Ye

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in

Faith:
Define:
FAITH [to trust; to persuade, to draw

sincerity of intentions
2 a (1) :

Paul provides a definition
of faith in Hebrews 11
Hebrews
11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things
not seen. 11:2 For by it the elders obtained a good
report. 11:6 But without
faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must
believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
We see in Hebrews 11:6 that
“without faith it is impossible to please him”, so it is the duty of all
Christians to work to grow in faith.
I recall Brother Robert
Hayden saying that “Faith is reaching out and taking hold of nothing and
holding on to it until it becomes something”.
Matthew
7:7 Ask,
and it shall be given you; seek, and
ye shall find; knock, and it shall

that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Scriptures relating to a
grain of mustard
Luke
Luke
17:5 And the apostles said unto the
Lord, Increase our faith. 17:6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this
sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea;
and it should obey you.
Mark
Matthew
17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I
say unto you, If ye have faith as a
grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to
yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Matthew
13:31 Another parable put he forth unto
them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his
field: 13:32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but
when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the
birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.
We typically hear preachers
and teachers refer to the scriptures above and how these infer that a small
amount of faith (like a grain of mustard seed) can move mountains. While
discussing this idea with my daughters, one of them made the comment that if a
small amount of faith could achieve this kind of result, then we wouldn’t need
bulldozers. I’m not downplaying the power of God or the potential of faith, but
I think we should be realistic about what level of faith is required to warrant
such a prayer to be answered. Jesus even said that “This kind can come forth by
nothing, but by prayer and fasting”.
After researching
information about the mustard seed, I think that the more applicable theme the
Lord was referring to, is the quick growth of a mustard seed to a large plant
and how a small seed of faith can grow quickly. If we can take hold of faith
until it grows and fully develops, what are the possibilities? We know that God
is bigger then any need that we have, but we can only see the greatest
potential if we can match these promises with equal trust and confidence.
Mustard seed
– According to botanists a Mustard seed planted one day can begin growing the
next. A grown black mustard would still be a herb, botanically speaking, but
sometimes a very big herb, popularly considered a shrub. There are wild mustard
plants over ten feet tall near the Jordan River, and even in moderate climate a
mustard plant may grow that tall, provided it gets enough sunshine. It must,
moreover, be remarked that generally trees in most parts of the
Spiritual growth doesn’t
happen over night, but requires time and effort to achieve spiritual maturity in
faith. How do we grow in faith? The Bible tells us that faith comes by hearing
or reading his Word. The more we study the scriptures and understand the way of
the Lord, the stronger we can grow spiritually.

Faith and Works
James
The verse below describes a
woman that continually made requests unto a judge until he finally became weary
of her and granted the request.
We don’t have to be concerned
about making God weary with our prayers, as he desires hearing from us. I think
this illustrates that a simple two minute prayer may not always get the job
done. Our continual seeking for answers to prayer proves to God that we are
sincere in our requests.
If we can plant the seed of
faith by asking God in prayer and then continually “water” and “nurture” it by
prayer, reading the Bible, attending church services, and fasting, we will see
the same growth potential that a mustard plant possesses. That is when we can
expect to see our prayers answered.

And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself,
Though I fear not God, nor regard man;
18:5 Yet because this widow
troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her
continual coming she weary me. 18:6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge

Keys to getting answers to
prayers
James
Effectual – Having adequate power or
force to produce the effect. Fervent- From ferveo, to be hot, to boil, to
glow. Hot; boiling; as a fervent summer;
fervent blood.
Righteous- Just; accordant to the
divine law. Applied to persons, it denotes one who is holy in heart, and
observant of the divine commands in practice; as a righteous man. Applied to
things, it denotes consonant to the divine will or to justice; as a righteous
act.
From
James 5 we can see that prayer with adequate faith (effectual) and a spiritual
burning or desire (fervent) from a Christian living a righteous life (holy
according to God’s standards) will avail much. This is as close to a recipe for
successful prayer as we need.

bosom.

From the following verse we
find that prayer mixed with fasting gets God’s attention. Perhaps this
is because God sees that we are serious and concerned enough to sacrifice
something for it.

Jesus provides a special promise of healing unto his
people
When considering the
special gift of healing that Jesus provided by suffering beatings and mocking,
we should remember that just like in salvation, the price has been paid in
full! The same faith that can save us, also allows us to claim the promise of
healing.
I recall several occurrences
of healing that my pastor Franklin Chapman, Sr. has told about over the years.
One of those occasions Brother Frank told about how as a young man he developed
a bone disease after severely breaking his ankle. The doctors put a rod in his
ankle but the bones would not mend. Doctors told him that if the bones did ever
mend, that he would likely have limited movement and severe arthritis would develop.
He told of being in a church service and the Lord telling him to remove the
ankle brace and leap for joy. He was healed instantly! That night after
returning home, he experienced severe pain in his ankle and asked his wife for
liniment to rub on his ankle. His wife told him that they didn’t have any
liniment in the house and that he was healed that night and didn’t need it.
Brother Frank told her that he was “healed if he did die”. He is now in his
seventies and hasn’t had any other problems with his ankle and hasn’t suffered
from any symptoms of arthritis.
I have witnessed and
experienced both instant healings and gradual ones, so I know that both do
occur. I recall that when I was a teenager, I had black spots that formed on the
skin of my left leg. Over a year after the spots developed, I was in a revival
service at church and Brother Robert Hayden said that the Lord told him that
someone had just been healed of cancer. No one testified that they had been
healed during that service, but later that night I saw that the black spots on
my leg were gone and the skin was clear, as though nothing had even been there.
I was a young Christian then and did not make mention of it until later, but
after seeing pictures of skin cancer, I have no doubt that it was me that was
healed that night. I could go on about stories of seeing and experiencing many
healings through the years. Needless to say, we serve a living Lord that is
touched by the feelings of our infirmities and can meet our every need!
Brother Frank’s experience
tells us that even with miracle healings, there can still be a struggle with
doubt. If we can overcome that doubt, we can see the desired result. As I
stated above, all healings aren’t instant miracles, but some are gradual and
require claiming the stripes that Jesus endured, just like we claim his blood
that he shed for our salvation. Satan will fight a Christian over their
salvation and try to make them doubt, so can we expect the devil to do any less
with our healing? With this in mind, should we have any lack of faith in a God
that created the universe and all things in it?

Sicknesses aren’t
necessarily the result of sins that we or our family committed, but as a result
of man’s curse or for God’s demonstration of healing.

some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their
sacrifices. 13:2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were
sinners above all the Galilaeans, because
they suffered such things?
John 9:1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which
was blind from his birth. 9:2 And
his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who
did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind 9:3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned,
nor his parents: but that the works of
God should be made manifest in him.
Because of mankind’s fall,
God allows Satan to oppress us. In Acts 10 we find that Satan or the devil
causes oppressions of sickness. Oppression should not be confused with
Possession. [Oppression-
imposition of
unreasonable burdens, cruelty; severity.
Possession - To hold; to occupy
without title or ownership]. Christians can not be possessed by demons but they
can be oppressed as is evident by Paul’s messenger from Satan (2Cor 12:7)

Luke
13:16 And ought not this woman, being a
daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath

The Lord limits how much
Satan can oppress Christians. Isaiah 59:19 says the Lord will lift up a
standard (flag of war) against him.
Isaiah
59:19 So shall they fear the name of the
LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood,
the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.
Because of the fall of man,
we can expect suffering and sicknesses, but we have Jesus Christ (our advocate
with the heavenly Father) who bore our sins and sicknesses. We should remember
that God is always in ultimate control and the devil can not supersede his
authority. We do not always understand why some things occur, but as 1

Spiritual Gifts
There are nine spiritual
gifts that Paul says that a Christian should covet or strive for after
salvation. Of these, Faith, Gift of Healing, and working of Miracles are three.
That means that if we can become spiritually minded and close enough to God,
that he will pour these blessings out to us. Some may say that these gifts were
only for the apostles and not for our day, but I haven’t found an “expiration

to every man to profit withal. 12:8 For
to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of
knowledge by the same Spirit; 12:9 To
another faith by the same Spirit; to

pass, before Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the
LORD came to him, saying, 20:5 Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my
people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal
thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD. 20:6
And I will add unto thy days fifteen
years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of
Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant
David's sake.
Exodus
32:11 And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath
wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of
Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?
32:12 Wherefore should the
Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in
the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of
this evil against thy people.
32:13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou
sworest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as
the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto
your seed, and they shall inherit it forever.
32:14 And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his
people.
Anointing with Oil and the
use of “Prayer Cloths” (used by Paul)
James
Mark
All churches may not have
the custom of using “prayer cloths”, but it is based on the scriptures in Acts
19 where Paul sent forth handkerchiefs and aprons to the sick. At our church, we
typically cut up small pieces of cloth and anoint them with oil and have the
church pray over them before sending them to the sick or for other needs. There
of course is no “magic” in the cloths, but it is the same faith that applies
when we anoint someone with oil.
Acts
If we do not receive our
healing in this life, all Christians have an unconditional promise of a glorified
body in heaven.
Revelations
21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears
from their eyes; and there shall be no
more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
